Creative Newport: A Call for Filmmakers
Are you a filmmaker with ties to Newport, eager to capture the vibrant essence of your city's creative spirit? Ffilm Cymru Wales is inviting applications from Newport-born or based filmmakers to delve into the heart of Newport’s creative community and showcase what makes Newport truly unique.
The Brief
We're seeking a creative filmmaker or team to craft a short filmic response, no longer than 15 minutes, exploring the theme of 'Creative Newport.' Your mission is to uncover the stories of the diverse and innovative individuals and organisations that contribute to Newport's rich tapestry of creativity.
The Details
Production Budget: Up to £10,000 (inclusive of VAT), covering all production costs, including crew, equipment hire, music licensing, archival footage, and post-production expenses.
Eligibility: Applicants must either be born in Newport or currently reside in the city. The film can not exceed 15 minutes in length, and applicants must have prior experience in filmmaking. Applicants must also be over 18 years of age and not in full-time education.
In addition to producing the film, successful applicants will also provide five paid work experience opportunities for Newport residents. This initiative aims to empower locals to contribute creatively to the project while gaining invaluable skills and experience in filmmaking. Supported by Ffilm Cymru Wales & BFI NETWORK, this training opportunity will equip participants with the tools they need to thrive in the industry. These placements do not form a part of your production budget.

Personal Statement (A4 page max): Outline your connection to Newport and why you're passionate about making this film. Describe your creative vision for displaying Creative Newport, whether through a documentary-style approach, interviews, or other creative interpretations. Explain how you plan to utilise the five work placements as part of your filmmaking process. Feel free to include your aspirations as a filmmaker and any additional insights that showcase your enthusiasm for this project.
Draft Budget: Please outline a draft budget for the film, including pre-production, production, and post-production costs. Utilise the provided template budget to detail expenses such as crew, equipment hire, music licensing, and any other necessary resources.
Submission Deadline: Wednesday 8th May 2024.
Interviews: Scheduled for the week commencing 13th May 2024.
Pre-Production: Spring/Summer 2024.
Training Workshops for Work Experience Participants (X5): Summer 2024. The Community Engagement Coordinator and Skills Executive will recruit volunteers for this purpose.
Production and Postproduction: Summer 2024.
Community Screening Supported by Ffilm Cymru Skills Team: Autumn 2024 (Must be delivered by November 2024).

Foot in the Door: Newport
Ffilm Cymru Wales have worked in partnership with Newport County Council over a number of years to offer creative training opportunities to Newport residents. In 2022 Ffilm Cymru Wales, in partnership with Newport City Council, were awarded funding from the UK Community Renewal Fund to deliver their biggest and most ambitious Foot in the Door project to date, giving people from the Newport area the chance to kickstart their creative careers with training and employment opportunities in film and TV.
