Foot in the Door: Newport

Foot in the Door is Ffilm Cymru Wales’ award-winning training programme that offers people new opportunities to develop their transferable skills into creative careers.

Since 2016, Foot in the Door has worked with partners across Wales, including housing associations, job centres and local authorities, to provide of new-entrant training placements on local film and TV productions, as well as support for accessibility, transport and childcare.

In 2022 Ffilm Cymru Wales, in partnership with Newport City Council, were awarded funding from the UK Community Renewal Fund to deliver their biggest and most ambitious Foot in the Door project to date, giving people from the Newport area the chance to kickstart their creative careers with training and employment opportunities in film and TV.

Bringing together local community groups, training organisations and industry employers, Foot in the Door: Newport achieved:

  • Over 1,000 people engaged in…
  • 70 masterclasses, practical training and employment opportunities, including 15 work experience placements on the set of productions like Netflix’s Sex Education and Good Gate Media’s Ten Dates.
  • A month-long drop-in pop-up shop in the heart of Newport for people to learn about opportunities in the film and TV industry.

Screen Shift

In December 2022, we invited guests from across Wales’ creative and skills sectors to reflect on the project’s successes and learnings, and look ahead to the future of film in Newport at our Screen Shift event.

Hosted by Priya Hall at Newport’s International Convention Centre, the day featured panel discussions with expert speakers, interactive feedback sessions and premiere screenings of films created during the project.

The UK Community Renewal Fund
