Foot in the Door: Swansea Arts Weekend programme is free and perfect for people interested in working on live events and those interested in content creation looking to focus on the creative industries. The programme includes working as a runner for a live event and producing engaging storytelling and reporting for social media channels.

Eligibility

This programme is open to people living OR working in Swansea, you must be 18 plus and not in full-time education.

What is the Foot in the Door: Swansea Arts Weekend? 

Ffilm Cymru is offering residents and workers in Swansea a unique opportunity to join the 'Foot in the Door' training experience during the exciting Swansea Arts Weekend. This initiative focuses on skill development and career exploration in the creative sector, delivered in partnership with the Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy department within Cultural Services at Swansea Council.

There will be a range of paid opportunities on Matsena Production’s Live Production OLYMPIC FUSION and the WE ARE ALL ARTISTS event programme.

This programme provides comprehensive training and practical experience in practical and creative roles as part of Swansea Arts Weekend. We will offer hands-on opportunities and skills development at creative events, emphasising professional development and transferable skills.

Event Details

Swansea Arts Weekend: 4th - 6th October. A vibrant celebration of the arts in Swansea City, featuring live music, dance performances, visual arts exhibitions, and workshops across various venues. Highlights include: 

  • Olympic Fusion: The Matsena Brothers will be leading a performance combining dance, music, and sport in response to the introduction of breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing in the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The performance will take place on Saturday 5th October in Museum Park, Swansea. 
  • We Are All Artists is a programme of exhibitions, events and activities produced by anchor arts venues located between Swansea train station and Swansea Marina; known as the “Station to the Sea” route. The venues include Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Volcano Theatre, Elysium, GS Artists and Mission Gallery. These events take place between the 4th and 6th October on Alexander Road, Swansea High Street, and Gloucester Place.

You Will Receive

A free three-day training course developing skills in event running and digital reporting, consisting of: 

  • One day of training on event running. 
  • One day of training on digital reporting. 
  • One day of on-the-job training at a live event paid at living wage. 

During the on-the-job training day, you’ll apply your new skills and gain real-life experience. Your expenses and lunch will be covered for this day. If you face a financial barrier, please mention it in your application so we can allocate funds where necessary.

Event Runner

Ideal for:

  • Those wanting to develop social media, vox pop, or documentary skills. 
  • Individuals interested in documenting and including communities in various industries. 
  • People looking to improve interview and reporting skills. 

Skills Developed: 

  • Content creation for live events. 
  • Interviewing techniques. 
  • Technical skills in filming and photographing events.

Important Dates

Wednesday, 31st July, 5:00 pm: Deadline for applications. 

Thursday, 5th September, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm: Engagement Day for Participants. 

Tuesday 24th – Wednesday 25th September: Training Week in central Swansea. 

The below dates are when some of the activity will take place. You will be allocated one day’s paid placement- you do not need to be available for all dates below: 

1st October onwards: Rigging of the event, fit-up, and onsite rehearsals.  

4th - 6th October: Swansea Arts Weekend. 

5th October: Live Production Event.
