Ffilm Cymru welcomes Welsh Parliament report on economic Covid-19 recovery
As the development agency for Welsh film, we are pleased to see the recommendations in the Welsh Parliament Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee’s report ‘Long-term Recovery from COVID-19.’
After advocating for the hardworking freelancers and micro businesses that make up Wales’ vibrant creative sector throughout the pandemic, we are glad that the report recognises the need for “urgent financial support for organisations and individuals working in the arts and creative industries.” This is particularly vital for those people that have not qualified for Government funding so far, as acknowledged in the report.
Ffilm Cymru particularly welcomes the emphasis on a sustainable skills strategy to help build economic recovery. As demonstrated by our award-winning Foot in the Door training programme, we believe that providing opportunities to develop transferable skills – from carpentry to catering, logistics to accountancy - is vital for advancing a diverse and adaptive workforce for Wales’ growing creative industries. Backing short, tailored, conversion courses could enable greater mobility and adaptability in the workforce, enabling individuals to move across sectors, responding to work opportunities.
As recognised in the report, all recovery activity should have at its core a commitment to equality and environmental sustainability. Ffilm Cymru commends the committee’s insight and ambition, and we share the commitment to build back better: greener, fairer and welcoming to all.
