Connector: Cinema Golau

Cinema Golau is a new platform for emerging Black and Ethnic Minority filmmakers to connect, engage and access opportunities in the creative industry.

They also serve to shed more light on international Black independent films by screening in cinemas and local venues.   

With support from Ffilm Cymru and BFI NETWORK Wales’ Connector Fund, Cinema Golau have been running a series of events for creatives to come together and discuss each other’s practice. The Filmmaker to Filmmaker programme allows for thought-provoking, open conversation in an intimate setting, to enlighten us to all on the joys and the pain of working in the creative industry - specifically, film.

Events so far have included:

  • A conversation between BAFTA and BIFA nominated producer, director and visual artist Dionne Walker, and curator and founder of the JGPA film archive June Givanni.
  • A screening of Francis-Anne Soloman’s Hero - Inspired by the Extraordinary Life & Times of Mr. Ulric Cross at Chapter, as part of the UK tour of the film and attended by the director.
  • Online workshops with Welsh animator Kyle Legall hosted in partnership with Cardiff Animation Festival, featuring draw-alongs of iconic figures of Black history and popular culture, and a Q&A with Kyle about his artistic style and creative process.

Cinema Golau also recently partnered with the International Windrush Film Festival to screen three Welsh films.
