Mad As Birds and Rep Production SF have started principal photography for Rebel Wilson’s first dramatic role in The Almond and The Seahorse. Bankside Films is handling international sales whilst Picnik Entertainment is overseeing UK Sales.
The Almond and the Seahorse stars Rebel Wilson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Trine Dyrholm, Meera Syal and Celyn Jones. The film is directed by BAFTA winning Celyn Jones (Six Minutes To Midnight, The Vanishing, Set Fire To The Stars) and Academy and BAFTA Award nominee Tom Stern (American Sniper, Sully, Changeling, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby) who will also bring his world class cinematography to the British production.
The screenplay is written by Celyn jones and award-winning playwright Kaite O’Reilly, based on the successful theatre production of the same name by O’Reilly.
Shooting in North Wales and Merseyside, England, the film was financed by REP Productions SF alongside Head Gear, Picnik Entertainment, Creative Wales and Ffilm Cymru Wales, with funding from the National Lottery.
In what promises to be a funny, poignant and moving story, the film follows two families as they come to terms with the aftermath of traumatic accidents and how they navigate new paths forward in their lives. Rebel Wilson (Jojo Rabbit, The Hustle, Pitch Perfect, Bridesmaids) plays the role of an aspiring archeologist, Sarah, anxious that she will be forgotten by her partner Joe (Celyn Jones) as his memory takes itself in a new direction. At the same time, Gwen (Trine Dyrholm, Queen of Hearts, Nico 1988, The Commune, The Legacy) is stuck in a time warp whose face in the mirror is unfamiliar and there's a strange person at the door claiming to be her partner, Toni (Charlotte Gainsbourg, Melancholia, 21 Grams, The Snowman). We follow the emotional rollercoaster of these families and the amazing people they are connected with along the way, including Cath, (Alice Lowe, Prevenge, Sightseers), Jenny (Ruth Madeley, Years and Years) and Nurse Moses (newcomer Patrick Elue).
