72 Films Selected for ‘Biggest and Best’ FOCUS Wales Film Festival yet
North Wales’ only BAFTA Cymru-qualifying Film Festival, FOCUS Wales, takes place in Wrexham on May 9th and 10th, with a whopping 72 short films selected - including many from local filmmakers.
2025 Set to be Bigger and Better Than Ever
This year’s festival has expanded to two cinema screens, thanks to support from Ffilm Cymru Wales, Creative Wales and venue Coleg Cambria, allowing more films to be shown than ever before.
55 films will compete for coveted awards in the official competition, with an expanded range of categories, including the usual drama, comedy and animation - now with thriller, experimental, live performance and more.
These films include a range of World, UK and Welsh premieres - giving audiences in Wrexham the very first chance to see them.
This year’s line-up includes The Farm by Leo Villares, a dark comedy where a couple’s idyllic retreat in Brazil takes an unexpected turn, and Pocket Princess by Olivia Loccisano, a fairytale where a young girl must take part in treacherous tasks in order to complete her doll collection.
This Year Local Films Take the Spotlight
17 additional films form this year’s out of competition screenings. This includes six films made by local filmmakers in the ‘Wrexham’s Finest’ section, plus 11 more from across the Celtic Regions in the ‘Celtic Stories’ section.
These include Millie and June by Karen Bird, a drama depicting the relationship between a mother and daughter, which becomes divided when a new man enters their lives, and Bare Knuckle - Fight for Redemption by Robin Abas, a documentary focussed on a reformed criminal trying to redeem himself through becoming a successful bare knuckle boxer.
Film Festival Producer Robert Corcoran is delighted with the line-up. “The FOCUS Wales Film Festival exists to shine a light on the best new and emerging talent from Wales and around the world. Our film selection this year does just that and I couldn’t be happier to bring filmmakers and audiences from across the world next month to Wrexham to celebrate their achievements.”
Alongside the short film screenings, the complete programme will feature film industry panels, networking parties and special keynotes and presentations.
This year’s speakers include the CEO of Ffilm Cymru Wales, Sector Development Manager for Screen at Creative Wales, S4C’s Young Audiences Commissioner, BBC Writers Development Coordinator and many more.
