Ray & Liz wins two British Independent Film Awards

The Ffilm Cymru-funded drama took home the Debut Director and Breakthrough Producer awards.

At the BIFA ceremony on Sunday 2nd December, Ray & Liz director Richard Billingham won The Douglas Hickox Award for Debut Director, while Jacqui Davies was awarded Best Breakthrough Producer.

Yorgos Lanthimos' latest film The Favourite reigned over this year's BIFAs with a record-breaking 10 wins, including Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Actress for Olivia Colman.

With Ray & Liz, Richard Billingham returns to the striking series of photographs that he captured of his family during Thatcher-era Britain to tell a universal story of everyday conflicts, loneliness, love and loss.

The cast includes Justin Salinger (Everest, Humans) and Ella Smith (The Voices, Kill Your Friends) as the younger Ray and Liz, Tony Way (High-Rise, Sightseers) as Uncle Lol, plus a number of young newcomers playing earlier incarnations of Billingham and his brother Jason as children.

Following its World Premiere in Locarno, Ray & Liz was selected for Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival. The film is due for release in 2019.

Ray & Liz is financed by the BFI and Ffilm Cymru Wales with National Lottery funding, in association with Welsh production company Severn Screen. Worldwide sales are being handled by Luxbox, excluding the UK which is being sold by Jacqui Davies’ Primitive Films.
