Launchpad Access: Calling for Writers and Directors to join cohort working with Hijinx

This is a Call For Applications for those interested in the opportunity to be part of a cohort of writers and directors working with actors from Hijinx Academy as part of BFI NET.WORK Wales' upcoming LAUNCHPAD ACCESS event in May.

The one day event will focus on disabled filmmakers, cast and crew, celebrate what can be done and look at how to improve inclusivity both on screen and behind the camera. Led by individuals with disabilities, the day will offer:

  • panel sessions
  • screenings
  • case studies
  • opportunities for networking and showcasing talent.

The Course

In the run up to the event we are working in partnership with Hijinx to offer 8 selected writers and directors (4 of each) the chance to participate in training with Hijinx Academy, over three weeks starting on 24th April.
Each writer and director will take part in 4 training sessions each, either morning or afternoon across 3 weeks (the training days are Monday to Thursday). Under the guidance of experienced Hijinx staff, participants will gain practical skills and insights necessary for creating work with actors who have learning disabilities. The onus will be on the writers and directors to lead the sessions.
The aim of this training cohort is to:

  • Inspire the creation of new material
  • Provide new opportunities for writer-director partnerships
  • Broaden the casting pool for disabled talent

The cohort will meet as a group with BFI NET.WORK and Ffilm Cymru Wales executives, as well as taking part in individual sessions. There will be a chance to share learning and outcomes during the Launchpad Access event on May 13th as well as continuing collaboration afterwards.

Hijinx is based in the Wales Millennium Centre, working alongside actors with and without learning disabilities to create innovative work which challenges preconceptions. Hijinx's vision is to change the landscape of the arts in Wales so that it becomes commonplace to see and hear performers with learning disabilities on our stages, screens and airwaves. Hijinx Academy is the only professional performance training course for actors with learning disabilities in Wales and equips actors to perform in Hijinx's professional productions. Students learn performance skills, facilitated by tutors and supported by professional theatre practitioners. For more information, please click here.

Hijinx have recently launched a dedicated casting platform and support service for actors with learning disabilities which includes direct pieces to camera from the 52 actors currently represented, details of what they can and can't do; what form of access support is required and what support Hijinx can offer: https://hijinxactors.co.uk/
