Developing films for families; supporting a film industry which is engaging and accessible to all.

Ffilm Cymru’s ‘Hatch’ programme will develop up to four live-action family films based on existing IP and will support filmmaker and venue understanding of how to cater for that audience. Targeted training events and activities that bring kids into the development process will provide filmmakers with a unique opportunity to gain feedback from their target audience and to benefit from the advice of experts in the field.

Hatch is a response to the relative scarcity of independent live-action family films currently in the market, which corresponds with a lack of culturally and socially diverse film stories for families and children to enjoy. A partnership with Chicken House Books, Hatch is driven by the Magnifier ethos – putting audiences first and getting the most out of your IP in a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment of shared learning and experimentation.

Ffilm Cymru’s Hatch development funding is there to support live-action family films based on existing IP (for example a book, app, or stage play). We have pre-agreed favourable option agreements with Chickenhouse Publishing for 6 books that could be suitable for adaptation into live-action family films. For a list of these books please see the document below.

To apply for development funding for any other genre of project, please refer to our standard Development Funding guidelines here. As with all of our development funding, projects involving a Wales born or based writer, director or producer will be prioritised. Projects with Welsh cultural value or projects involving significant spend in Wales will also be considered.

Our Hatch fund is currently closed for applications.
